Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder (DMDD):
Developing Treatment Strategies

Speaker: Larry Fisher, PhD, ABPN

Irritability is one of the most common symptoms of psychiatric disorder in children and teens, and disruptive irritability with explosive outbursts can be a sign of severe mental illness. Child psychiatrists and pediatric behavioral neurologists, perhaps concerned about the upsurge in childhood bipolar diagnoses, have added a new diagnosis in the revised Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-5). This diagnosis is Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder (DMDD).

Larry Fisher, PhD, ABPN, provides a closer look at Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder (DMDD) and the distinction between DMDD and Bipolar Disorder.

During this video presentation, viewers will learn to:

  • Understand the criteria for DMDD and compare it to Bipolar Disorder.
  • Describe the onset and course of DMDD and discuss the likely neuropathology.
  • Review the treatment options, the research basis for treatment, and the risks and benefits.

We would like to express our appreciation to Beth Confer and the Clarity Child Guidance Center in San Antonio, Texas, for sharing this video record of Dr. Fisher’s Continuing Education presentation, which the Clarity Center hosted on February 27, 2015.

Sadly, Dr. Larry Fisher passed away due to a sudden illness on May 11, 2015. We are proud of his legacy of improving the care for severely mentally ill children. We are equally grateful to have had the privilege of working alongside him in this regard.
